The jail is a facility in downtown Minneapolis where people accused of a crime are held before trial. While in jail, a person is known as an inmate.
The jail has 2 locations across the street from each other. One location is inside the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility building. The other is inside City Hall.
Both locations are just north of the Government Plaza light rail station. This station serves both the METRO Blue Line and the METRO Green Line.
The jail is also known as the Adult Detention Center.

Post cash bail or bond for an inmate
You can post cash bail or bond for an inmate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility.
For security, you'll go through weapons screening.
Go to the in-custody records window:
- Have the case or warrant number.
- Bring the exact bail amount in cash.
- We cannot give change. There is no cash machine on site.
- We cannot take checks, debit or credit cards.

Visit an inmate
You can visit someone in jail by video.
No in-person visits by friends and family are allowed at this time.
In-person visits are allowed by attorneys and police 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Video visits
- Visits can last up to 20 minutes.
- Visits cost $4.00 per 20 minutes.
- Inmates can have visitors once a day and up to 3 times a week.

- Use any device with a high-speed internet connection.
- Create an account at Securus Technologies and request access to visit at the Hennepin County jail.
- You must schedule a visit 24 hours in advance.
- Jail staff reviews the request and approves appropriate visitors.
- Once approved, you can schedule visits online.

Inmates are charged a transaction fee when they withdraw money from their account:
- The fee is 10% of the transaction or a $10 maximum.
- No feesapply to initial deposits, final withdrawals, or money deposited for bail.

- These may be held for verification before money is available to the inmate.

Phone calls
You can only receive calls from inmates. You cannot make calls to inmates.
If you do not wish to receive phone calls from inmates, have problems receiving phone calls, or have questions about bills for collect calls, contact Correctional Billing Services.

You may only bring one set of clothing suitable for court for an inmate's felony trial. No other items are allowed.

Education and support for inmates
Volunteers regularly visit the jail to provide instruction and mentoring to inmates.
On request, chaplains will provide spiritual counseling to inmates.
Volunteers provide educational opportunities and conduct meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous, parenting classes, drug abuse prevention, and support for battered women.

We offer education to inmates through the HOPE program to help them create better opportunities once they’re released.

Sexual assault or harassment in the jail
We have a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of sexual assault or sexual harassment at the jail.
If you think an inmate faces immediate threat of sexual assault, call 612-348-8318 or 911.
