Why are libraries getting rid of OverDrive? ›

Discontinuing the OverDrive app allows our development teams to focus their efforts on Libby. We also want to make it as easy a possible to promote your digital library to your users. Having one app simplifies how you train your users, answer questions, and stay up to date with changes.

The OverDrive app for iOS, Android, and Windows 8/10 was discontinued on May 1, 2023 and is replaced by Libby. The OverDrive app for Kindle Fire devices will be discontinued June 7, 2023. You can install Libby from the Amazon Appstore on compatible Fire tablets.

There are a couple reasons why you might not be able to find your library's OverDrive collection: Your library doesn't have a digital collection with OverDrive, or they stopped using OverDrive's services. If you're using the OverDrive app, some libraries (such as law libraries) aren't discoverable in the app.

If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. It's a great one-device experience. If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app for now.

Libby is built by OverDrive, who also developed the legacy OverDrive app. Libby features the same free digital content from your library that you may have enjoyed in the OverDrive app. However, Libby was designed to make finding, borrowing, and enjoying free digital titles easier than ever.

It was discontinued at the end of April 2023. OverDrive's 2nd generation and only app to use is called Libby.

If you previously used the OverDrive app, it's time to switch to Libby! To get started, simply download the Libby app, find your library, and sign in. Your loans, holds and wish list items will be waiting for you when you get there.

Overdrive is great, but to be honest, there's not any legal way to really hang onto your books forever. This is due, primarily to the DRM protection that Overdrive keeps on its books.

As of May 1, 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued.
